Experiential learning is defined as a learning experience which provides opportunities to students to develop their skills, knowledge, values, and professionalism in a non-traditional learning environment. There is a list of activities that are regarded as experiential learning. They include service learning, undergraduate research, study aboard, professional work experience, and so on. The Disaster and Society course, which is one of the required courses offered in the Disaster Studies MA Program at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley is designated as a service learning course. Unlike other courses which are developed to deliver service learning opportunities to students, this course was developed to provide service learning opportunities to both students and instructor of the course. This presentation will provide a description of service learning approach as well as designated elements which benefit both students and instructor.
